New York Fashion Week: MAC for Rodarte Spring 2010

M∙A∙C Senior Artist Chantel Miller designed the spectacular Maori-inspired geometric tattoo makeup seen on the runway at the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2010 runway show this week.

Working in close collaboration with designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy and key makeup artist James Kaliardos (for M∙A∙C), Miller created the full-sleeve, half-sleeve and neck tattoo designs, which were meant to evoke the feeling of a futuristic tribe, over the course of 4 weeks.

The morning of the show, Chantel, who specializes in body painting, spent 4 intensive hours with a team of 40 artists hand painting the elaborate body art. Each model received a customized combination of the designs depending on which look they were wearing in the show.

This is undoubtedly among my very fave looks of the season thus far...what say you?

Mining for Style: Boden

Boden is one of those unexpected fashion resources - not quite as "hip" or "cool" as J.Crew but stocked full of sweet basics with a twist (at a relatively affordable price point, at that!)

In M·A·C culture, the human face and body are the ultimate canvas for makeup artists. Makeup and brushes are quite literally the tools. M·A·C Artists are influenced by all forms of art from painting to photography to images in film, using makeup as their means of expression. Like fine artists, they create depth, sculpt contours, brush on highlights, blend textures, mix colours, or apply pigment straight from the tube like Van Gogh. But in this case, the canvas talks back.

“We are M·A·C … Make-Up Art Cosmetics. Every face is a canvas to us, a glorious chance for spectacular transformation. It’s nice to be pretty, but it’s so much more fabulous and interesting to be a persona, something once out-of-grasp that has, through the power of art, become thrillingly real,” says James Gager, Senior Vice President/Creative Director. “In keeping with our art heritage, it made sense to ask these three artists to participate in a unique collaboration with us for fall. Working in their individual mediums – drawing, photography and painting – each applied a different colour palette to a portrait, with inspired results.”

FALL ’09 AS SEEN BY MARILYN MINTER, PHOTOGRAPHER

Marilyn Minter, equally at home in art and fashion, has a penchant for iridescence that made her a perfect candidate for M·A·C’s glitter pigments, putting them to utterly seductive use. Minter’s erotic imagery zooms in on a succulently wet, red lip, a dappled, sequined eye, or a silverized stiletto splashing in the mud. The Whitney Biennial Artist says she’s “Never met a model who actually thinks she’s beautiful,” and that observation goes a long way to explain how she connects to what M·A·C wants to say about all-inclusiveness – we’re ALL beautiful sometimes. Pigments in Push the Edge and Copper or Gold Glitter have the power to make anyone feel like they WILL be seen – and desired.

FALL ’09 AS SEEN BY RICHARD PHILLIPS, PAINTER

Richard Phillips surprised even himself with this project. Using the expert skills of a photo-retoucher, he subjected his own painting to a M·A·C makeover with the new eye shadows, blushes and lipsticks. Andy Warhol did a cameo on The Love Boat in 1985…and in the same spirit, Richard Phillips’ 1998 painting, Spectrum, made its debut on an episode of the scandalous Gossip Girl – a sign of the times! Recycled and re-imagined ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s advertisments and images, and every colourful issue ever considered when pondering the question of “identity” is what Richard Phillips is all about. His bold and beautiful portraits are highly technical, a refinement of precise, academic painting, so relevant to everything M·A·C artistry is all about. A collection of Eye Shadow quads, Lipsticks, Lipglass, and The Perfect Cheek Blush just leap off the canvas!

FALL ’09 AS SEEN BY MAIRA KALMAN, ILLUSTRATOR

Famous for her whimsical visual diaries, Maira Kalman performed a bit of magic with M·A·C's new Technakohl Eye Liners and Eye Shadows, instantly drafting a captivating look at a stranger. Cheeky, witty, always amusing, Maira’s illustrations are cute and colourful, wonderfully child-like, playful…and sophisticated all at once. Warm and eccentric at the same time, Maira’s faces are full of cock-eyed optimism, with the tiniest smidge of city-girl-snobbism…simply, scrumptiously, stupendously sublime!

For MAC's upcoming Make-Up Art Cosmetics collection, creative director James Gager (love, love, love) hand-selected three of his favorite artists - each of a different medium - to collaborate with.

NAILED. Jin Soon Collaborates with MAC for Fall 2009

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing (and friendly) Jin Soon at her West Village Hand and Foot Spa. If you're not in the know, Soon is THE go-to manicurist for editorial work and a serious force in the world of female beauty entrepreneurs with three amazingly popular locations in New York alone. At the time, I couldn't say a word about the event specifics, but I can now spill the beans - MAC has tapped into Jin Soon's creative power to create the Fall Nail Trend collection.

With six bold and unique colors, this collection is a must. I've actually been rocking For Fun (below) lately, as it's the most summery of the bunch, but come fall, I will be tearing into the remaining five colors including Dry Martini (a dirty olive green) and Beyond Jealous (a dark, dark teal.)

The Nail Trend collection hits counters on August 27 and I definitely think that at least a few of these colors will sell out - so, mark your calendars now!

New York Fashion Week: Backstage at Vivienne Tam

Backstage at Vivienne Tam this afternoon was a hub of activity. The store on Mercer housed her Fall 2009 presentation and also a full live blogging station sponsored by HP, which showcased their new TouchSmarts (see the wall of monitors behind the backstage tables?)

Behind the scenes, Nexxus created the timeless chignons while MAC Senior Artist Polly Osmond gave the girls a glamorous but clean look, heavy on the black eyeliner. For a glimpse behind the scenes, check out the gallery!

New York Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at Reem Acra

Backstage at Reem Acra was a hectic affair. Staged in the Fifth Avenue showroom, there were models (along with the hair and makeup pros) strewn throughout the offices (one model was even getting her hair done next to the office copier.)

MAC Senior Artist Polly Osmond was on hand to create a gorgeous fresh face for the girls (Reem herself just asked that the girls look naturally beautiful) while the team at Bumble & Bumble pulled together a chic, red-carpet-ready side chignon.

CND's nail pros were also on hand for matching manicures and pedicures with a special nude polish created just for the presentation.

A strong trend for Fall seems to be a lighter look - lots of nude lips and more natural makeup. Quite a departure from last year's smoky eye and red lip!

Here Kitty, Kitty - MAC's Subversive Take on Hello Kitty

MAC Creative Director/resident genius James Gager has a naughty, naughty take on our girl du jour, Hello Kitty. (Very Alice in Wonderland down the rabbit hole...) When I saw this video at the blogger preview in November, it made me see Kitty and the MAC collection in a whole new light.

The fierce folks over at MAC are celebrating their new Hello Kitty collection in grand style. Last night's fete at NYC hot spot Cedar Lake showcased 30 Hello Kitty-inspired couture creations by designers like Zac Posen, Catherine Malandrino, Yigal Azrouel and Emanuel Ungaro among others - with celebs, models and the generally fabulous in attendance.
