eye4style How To: Survive Your Accessories
Stiletto booties and Sky-high gladiator heels. Spy Bags loaded down with fifty must-haves and jam-packed carry-ons. I don't know about you, but MY body takes a BEATING from my accessories. And while the spa pedi and cursory back rub might be decent quick fixes, I do find myself increasingly concerned by the long term effects of my fashion decisions.
Mitchell Yass, physical therapist and author of Overpower Pain: The Strength Training Program that Stops Pain without Drugs or Surgery, believes that women must practice preventative measures – specifically targeted strength training – if they want to rock their favorite accessories now , but avoid the agony later.
Mitch’s prescription for slaves to fashion who simply will not scrimp on style?

- If you want to wear super high heels (exhibit A, above), know that this will cause your center of mass to move forward, putting stress on your knees and potentially straining the muscles that support them, creating knee pain. You need to strengthen the glutes (buttocks) and hamstrings (back thigh muscles). These muscles are hip extensors which are responsible for keeping the torso upright. The strengthening of these muscles will prevent the torso from being drawn forward due to the severe angle created under the foot by wearing a super high heel.
- An easy exercise is the Straight-Leg Dead Lift using a barbell or dumbbells. Stand with your feet slightly more than shoulder width apart and your toes pointed slightly out. Hold the dumbbells in front of your thighs with your palms facing your thighs, your knees slightly bent, your back slightly arched and your elbows straight through the entire motion. Slowly bring the weight down your legs, keeping it as close to your legs as possible throughout the entire motion, until you feel a pull in your hamstrings. Rise and repeat.

- Carrying a heavy bag increases the load on an arm and shoulder. The support of the arm is created by the muscles that attach from the neck and spine to the shoulder and shoulder blade such as the upper traps and muscles between the shoulder blades (interscapular muscles). Strengthening of these muscles must be achieved to support this additional load. If not, the potential for creating impingement or catching of one of the tendons that run through the shoulder joint is very possible. The other potential is that one of the muscles that support this weight including the upper traps could strain. This would create neck pain and very possibly headaches.
- You can prevent this through Military Presses. Start with the weights at shoulder height with palms facing forward and then begin to lift them overhead until your elbows are just short of locking. Then slowly lower the weights to the point where the elbows are just below the line of your shoulders.
Foot Saviors: Secrets to Making Shoes Comfortable
Like many women, I have a weakness for beautiful shoes that inevitably seem to kill my feet. So, along the way, I've created an arsenal of 'foot saviors' - products that make uncomfortable shoes a bit more bearable.
Tops on my list are Foot Petals. Available in several styles including Heavenly Heels, Amazing Arches and Killer Kushionz, these insoles add a bit of cushion and also function as shock absorbers. Not to mention - if you're a sale shopper (who isn't these days?) and snag shoes in a half size larger than your usual size, try adding inserts to make them feel up to a half size smaller.
Bliss Problem Salved 20-in-1 Wonder Balm is also a major foot savior for me - I always have this convenient 20-use product tucked in my bag. Simply swipe the handy dandy stick anywhere that you need blister protection and a need of moisture - try it on heels and the tops of feet, in particular.
Last but not least, in times of emergency (read: I already have a blister), I love Band-Aid Advanced Healing Blister Cushions. These waterproof and cushioned gel pads stay put (even through a few days worth of showers) and heal blisters painlessly and quickly. Snag them at drugstores nationwide or via drugstore.com.

Fashion's Future: The Independent Handbag Designer Awards (Now With Shoes!)
Handbag Designer 101 announced the winners of the Third Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards on the evening of June 17th at the New York Historical Society and I was lucky enough to attend (special thanks to Tina Aldatz of Foot Petals, a sponsor of the event!)
Designed to give handbag designers an opportunity to break into the notoriously competitive accessory industry, 7 awards were given for Handbag Design Excellence and one award reserved for Shoes. I've included snaps of my favorite winning bags in the gallery below, so be sure to check it out. For the full list of winners, check out this link.
Celebrated British designer Lulu Guinness received the IHDA ICONOCLAST Award this year for her 20 years in accessories design. I'm a longtime fan or her feminine and witty handbags - as far as I'm concerned this award was well deserved.
Are you a fan of any of the bags from these young designers?
A Timely Reminder: The Bubble Umbrella
It's raining cats, dogs, bunnies, mice and more in New York today. Luckily, I had my trusty clear bubble umbrella to keep me dry. Not only do bubble umbrellas have a delightfully mod sort of appeal, they're also the ONLY umbrellas that never blow inside out and effectively keep the most important parts of me (breasts, that is...just kidding. Obviously, I meant hair.) dry.

Mine is Nicole Miller but Urban Outfitters has this cute one, available now for just $18. Click here to buy.
Designer Interview: Natalie Ann Griffith of New York Nat
What inspires your designs?
Natalie Ann Griffith: I am inspired by many different aspects of my life. As a former dancer, I am influenced by the beauty of ballet. A dancer's movements appear effortless, yet provoke thought and emotion. My hair accessories all have their own story to tell, much like the dancers in a ballet. Some are sweet, while others are edgy. A dream of mine is to design hair pieces for the American Ballet Theatre. My second love is vintage accessories. Many of my headbands are vintage inspired and are adorned with sparkling brooches reminiscent of the 1940s. I admire my grandparents generation who wore beautiful hats and jewelry. During my upcoming trunk show at Henri Bendel, July 2-5, I will be showcasing new designs focused on these inspirations.
How do you incorporate headbands/head pieces into your own wardrobe?
Natalie Ann Griffith: I am always mixing things up! I love wearing my hair accessories with jeans and a t-shirt to wearing them with my hair up and a gown for a black tie event. The key to wearing the hair accessories is to have fun and be fearless!
Is there a particular woman that you imagine wearing your pieces?
Natalie Ann Griffith: Those who love to accessorize with statement pieces are New York Nat girls! Whether it is the downtown trendsetter who pairs a headband with leather jacket to hit the newest hot spot or the uptown lady who dresses for an evening of elegance. My pieces are for every woman depending on how they decide to style it.

Luxe Must: Little Goddess Headband

Even for an avid shopper like myself, it's a challenge navigating the waters at Etsy. There are SO MANY wonderful designers in the mix with the mediocre. Hong Kong gal yellowgoat is my latest discovery and she's doing something truly beautiful and unique, hand-sculpting delicate and detailed headbands out of brass. The Little Goddess Headband ($128), above, takes inspiration from nature, weaving and twisting leaves and branches to create a beautiful piece that adds whimsy and girlish glamour to any look.

Jennifer Behr: Spring 2009

As always, the head pieces are glamorous and fun as are the NEW Jennifer Behr belts.
Take a look through the gallery for a few of my favorite pieces; prices range from $58 to $725. Visit www.jenniferbehr.com to shop!
